Description: The Nemunas Lowland Basin covers approximately 9,800 km2. It includes the lowest 100 km of the river, where the river forms the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad District, the Kursiu Lagoon, the Minija River and a number of smaller rivers that drain into the Kursiu Lagoon or direct into the Baltic Sea.The condition of water and sanitation facilities in the settlements in the Nemunas Lowland river basin is generally unsatisfactory. Poor quality of construction together with inadequate levels of maintenance has resulted in deterioration of infrastructure. This, combined with frequent over-sizing of the infrastructure, inefficient plant, and high staffing levels has lead to high running costs, affordability problems and poor levels of cost recovery.JacobsGIBB and Vilnius Consult has been appointed by CFCU to establish a technically, environmentally and financially prioritised Master Plan for the improvement of water management in the Nemunas Lowland Basin area. This would be in context of the raw water sources, treatment and supply, wastewater collection, treatment and disposal of sewage and sludge. The objective is to provide a Master Plan in accordance with the Phare programme requirements.
