Description: Town of Kedainiai, located in the Nemunas Midland river basin of Lithuania. Kedainiai town with a population of 35,600, is situated mainly on the right bank of the Nevezis River, at its confluence with the Dotmuvele and Smilga rivers. The town is the district capital for a district having an area of 1677 km2. The municipal water supply currently serves 31,200 residents, or 88% of Kedainiai’s population; the wastewater system serves 29,200, or 82% of the population.The quality of potable water, and the collection and treatment of wastewater are seen to be important factors in the future development of the industry and tourism in the town. JacobsGIBB and Vilnius Consult have been appointed by CFCU to review the existing situation and improve the water and wastewater treatment plants. This would be in context of the raw water sources, treatment and supply, wastewater collection, treatment and disposal of sewage and sludge.
The objective is to provide a feasibility and EIA study in accordance with the Phare programme requirements. The project study period is four months beginning February 2002, with a total identified funding of Euro 10.2 million. The technical assistance is being provided in Lithuania and UK by senior professionals consisting of nominated experts with disciplines covering project management, economics, finance, civil, water and wastewater engineering, planning and environmental science.
